Drives Fore Drake
The day was an amazing success with 104 golf participants and many more joining the crowd for evening festivities. A Chick-Fil-A lunch was served around noon followed by a shotgun start at 1PM. Participants had opportunities to win various prizes throughout the day. The winning team including Dusty Rhoades, Jim Warden, Brian Robbins, and Wade Sanders were each awarded a framed Oakwoods Country Club golf flag with Drake's handprints. Leonard Taylor, Ray Love, and Pam Stevens won longest drive prizes and closest to the pin winners were Art Bender, Don Curly, Bradley Eller, and Rick Toburen. Golfers and volunteers enjoyed refreshments throughout the day provided by Chick-Fil-A, Canteen, Dean and Barbara Johnson, and R.H. Barringer. Doug Gross of Cold Mountain Photography photographed the event.
After a day of beautiful fall weather and golf everyone indulged in a delicious meal prepared by the BBQ and Brew Crew. Dinner music was provided by Amy Hornbeck, a local violinist who is also living with Cystic Fibrosis. She blessed the crowd by sharing her story about what it’s like to battle CF daily and how God has sustained her and given her hope. Sabrina Watt, from the Charlotte Cystic Fibrosis chapter, shared about the exciting research that is underway to develop therapies to better control and possibly cure the disease and how this is primarily funded by the CF Foundation. Numerous items, gift cards, and services were graciously donated and entered into silent and live auctions. Tommy Livingston of Atlantic Auction Service led the action packed live auction. The night came to an end with a surprise performance by Drake himself singing his own renditions of various songs and playing imaginary instruments!
Thanks to all those who helped make the first annual event such a success!
